Viet Nam Social:The Social system of Viet Nam was held together by Confucianism based on the five relationships. Subject to ruler, son to father, wife to husband, younger brother to elder brother and mutual respect for one another between friends. These influenced the evolution of Viet Nam as an authoritarian society which the subordinate role of women and the family unit were thought of as integral to the natural order of the universe. Traditional society was based off of education and occupation and seperated into four different groups: scholar-officials, farmers, artisans, and merchants. Scholar-officials were recruited through rigorous service and examinations in Chinese literature and philosophy. The emperor and his family, along with the scholar-officials make up the ruling class.
Political: The political system of Viet Nam are of Chinese origin. Political institutes were made during the course of the the Chinese rule (111 B.C.E. to 939 C.E.). Viet Nam's political status has been determined by many things, Communism being the most recent. This estabilshed a poliitcal center. Those who ruled were not divine but they ruled with the divine right by reason of their virtue, recieving unconditional loyalty of subjects.
Religion: For the most part, Viet Nam has followed the religion of Buddhism as an offshoot to Hinduism. Its founder was Gautama. According to Buddhism human salvation lies within the discovering of the four noble truthes: man is born to suffer in following lives, the cause of such suffereing is man's need for earthly pleasures and possessions, suffering ends upon his deliverance from this crabing, and he achieves this deliverance by following the Eightfold Path.
Buddhism spread from China to Viet Nam's Red River Delta region around 200 C.E.
Trade/Technology: In the North, the French introduced agriculture with things like coffee, tea, cotton and tobacco.
Shipbuilding industry were begun in Hanoi.
Railroads, powerstations, hydraulics works were constructed.
A lot of technology and ideas were taken from Chinese philosophy however many other countries, including major support from the French, helped with the trade industry.
Economic System: The South Viet Nam was designated to be developed agriculturally, the North to be industrial development. This seperation distorted the Vietnamese economy by stressing regional differences.
From 1954 to 1975, Viet Nams' economy became increasingly dependent on foreign aid. Mainly from the United Sates.
